My Private Professor Launches Free Tutoring Initiative to Support Students Residing in SAHARA’s Transitional Living Home.

My Private Professor (MPP) has launched an initiative to provide free tutoring to youth supported by South Asian Helpline and Referral Agency (SAHARA), a nonprofit organization that supports survivors of abuse in the South Asian communities in Southern California.

MPP, an impact-driven, online educational services company that collaborates with businesses and organizations to provide personalized tutoring services to clients and employees, has focused its giveback model on providing meaningful, educational support to students experiencing homelessness and in long-term foster care.

“I’m delighted to share that My Private Professor will be providing free tutoring to the clients and children residing in the transitional living home at SAHARA, an incredible nonprofit that provides critical resources to survivors of all forms of abuse in the South Asian community and beyond,” shared Sona Shah, CEO and Founder of MPP. “We are grateful for the opportunity to play a role in helping these students with one-on-one tutoring in all subjects to help them succeed,” notes Shah, a longtime supporter of SAHARA who served on their Board of Directors as Vice President from 2012-2017.

“Tutoring is one of the most agreed-upon and impactful tools available to educators for improving student learning.” (Poverty Action Lab’s “The Transformative Potential of Tutoring for PreK-12 Learning Outcomes: Lessons from Randomized Evaluations.”)

Unfortunately, students experiencing homelessness and in long-term foster care often do not have access to critical resources such as high-dosage tutoring.

Of students experiencing homelessness, only twenty-four percent are academically proficient in math, only twenty-six percent are academically proficient in science, and only twenty-nine percent are academically proficient in reading. (The Hill’s “Changing America: More students are experiencing homelessness than ever before.”)

“The barriers that these students experience in an unstable home are mental, emotional, and financial hardships that prevent them from focusing on their academics,” noted Mehnaz Khan, Program Specialist at SAHARA.

“By working with My Private Professor, the children of our clients can receive individual attention in a unique learning experience. This partnership is helping us foster each child’s academic goals & improve their attitudes towards learning in school.”
