Do you live for stories brimming with galactic exploration, extraterrestrial adventures, and time travel escapades — aka sci-fi?

Sometimes, the best things in life come in futuristic, alien-filled sci-fi worlds. However, we can’t physically enter these worlds (yet). And so we often look to stories to quench the desire to immerse ourselves in obscure stories of time travel, parallel worlds, and space habitats. Meanwhile, some of us crave to become an even engulfed in sci-fi by writing stories. 

Perhaps you want to turn your sci-fi reading kick into something bigger: a sci-fi writing hobby. Maybe you are a writer looking to expand your horizons on the page and/or strengthen your writing skills. Or, maybe you just love sci-fi and want to turn your passion into a concrete tribute.

Below are some sci-fi adventure story ideas that you can use to overcome any inch of writer’s block, and start getting your ideas onto the paper.

Sci-fi prompt ideas

  1. Write from the point of view of a mega-computer that has total control over society. The computer wants  to delegate some of its tasks to the humans, but doesn’t know how to go about it in a fair way.
  2. Upon an alien species coming to Earth, humans realize that their jobs are in danger. Then, the humans and aliens must find a way to cohabit.
  3. In the near future, the government creates a policy that requires all organizations and corporations to integrate a new technology, which provides all workers with hologram assistants.
  4. One human being discovers that for decades, humans have been consuming a brainwashing agent on a daily basis. Additionally, she learns that, little by little, this substance could be turning people into poisonous sea creatures. 
  5. A dying woman stumbles upon information that could end global warming. Then, she needs to find a way to successfully impart her knowledge to the world.
  6. A man discovers that the government has been utilizing AI for years. In addition, he figures out that robots have slowly been taking on all of the decision-making roles that humans assumed to be under the responsibility of humans.
  7. A software developer creates a technology that allows humans to correct a limited number of their mistakes. Now, policy makers have to determine how to best implement the software into society.
  8. A group of friends play a game of Hide and Seek and find themselves separated in different time periods. They realize that they are stuck, but are presented with the chance to solve a puzzle. Doing so will not only reunite the friends but also fix major societal issues. 
  9. In a beta program for a new technology, participants sign up to have their consciousness transferred to non-human objects. It is up to the government to decide which objects will take on human consciousness.
  10. In a society built on the premise that health and fitness comes before everything else, AI monitors track every imaginable metric of human vitality. At the same time, citizens are training to become immortal.
  11. A nationwide competition will grant five special guests the opportunity to travel to the annual space duel, which has never been open for humans before.
