Parwinder U
About Me
Hi, my name is Parwinder Uppal. I recently graduated from UC Irvine with a degree in Microbiology & Immunology. I enjoy spending time reading, listening to podcasts, engaging in political and philosophical conversations, working out and most importantly watching football (I’m a diehard Raiders fan).
I spent the past two years of my undergrad working as an Academic Tutorial Leader with the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) at UCI. Over those two years, I found lots of enjoyment and fulfillment in being able to work with fellow students who were taking the same classes that I had taken in previous years, and assisting them in learning how to best study for and be engaged with the material they were learning. I know what it’s like to be a student and struggle with some classes or simply want a little extra help with others, which is why I really enjoyed working with my students and seeing concepts finally click when we were able to talk and work through them.
If you’re reading this, it means you’ve already taken the first and most important step to better your learning, which is to ask for help. I’m looking forward to meeting and connecting with you, and I hope we can work together to take the next steps towards improving your learning.

Tutoring Experience
I was an Academic Tutorial Leader with the Learning & Academic Resource Center for two years. My responsibilities included facilitating discussions and guiding students in creating study tools and building study habits they would use in other classes. I led weekly tutorial sessions for organic chemistry and multiple biology courses for an average of 140 undergraduate students per year. I prepared interactive lesson plans twice a week that combined research-proven active learning techniques and peer-to-peer collaboration to further student success. Over the quarter, I would also hold midterm and final review sessions based on the structure of the classes my students were taking. My first year as a Tutorial Leader was done remotely using Zoom, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. My second year was in a hybrid format for fall quarter, including online and in-person sessions, and fully in-person for winter and spring quarters.
Philanthropy / Volunteering Experience
I spent the majority of my middle and high school years spending 1 hour every Sunday morning at the local gurdwara (Sikh Temple) doing seva (community service). I would help clean the gurdwara and serve langar (food) to those who came to pray. I’ve participated in several “feed the homeless” events with the Jakara Movement throughout my high school years. I was also in Key Club during high school and spent countless hours volunteering, including helping at the local Easter Egg Hunt every year, volunteering to work at the small local amusement park, as well as various fundraising events for different organizations.
