More About Me
My name is Oscar Torres. I was raised in Las Vegas, and my parents are from Mexico. I’ve been teaching/tutoring for the past five years in a variety of subjects, from ballroom dance, to conversational Spanish, and now math and physics. I enjoy Latin social dancing, guitar, and rock climbing!
My love for teaching started from an early age and continues to this day. I was in eighth grade and my first students were a group of sixth graders who struggled in math. I taught SAT seminars at my high school, public speaking classes, and leadership classes.
I daydream about giving lectures to auditoriums after retiring or ways I would explain concepts that were difficult for me to grasp. Two of my favorite films are “Stand and Deliver” and “The Marva Collins Story”, which are about teachers inspire unmotivated and seemingly hopeless students in underserved areas.
What to Expect in a Session:
Pomona College - 2020
I graduated from Pomona College in 2020 with a degree in physics. When I was in high school, I was my school's only national merit finalist, and only national AP scholar. I was also the salutatorian. My SAT Math score is 740, and my SAT Math II Score is 770. I got a 5/5 on AP Calculus BC and a 4/5 on AP Physics C.
I've held several teaching and tutoring positions throughout the years. When I was at Pomona college, I tutored high school students after school with upward bound, helped students with Spanish, and was a TA for physics lab for a total of 3 years. After graduating, I decided to do tutoring full time and have been tutoring students privately in physics, math, and SAT for the past 2 years.
Philanthropy / Volunteering Experience
I volunteered in a variety of different places and have done many kinds of work. I will highlight three of my experiences. The first one was at a place called Toys for Tots. It is a philanthropic organization that creates wooden toy cars from scratch and gives them to less fortunate children. I worked there for several weeks during the summer and mainly worked on the wheels and applying an oil finish to the cars. My next volunteer experience was at my local library. When I was there, I mainly cleaned books, reshelved them, and prepared materials for programs the library hosted. My last volunteer experience was at my local hospital. I worked as a front desk attendant while there. My main tasks were to direct visitors to their loved one's rooms. In addition, I discharged patients in wheelchairs and delivered important items to different wings of the building.
