My Private Professor Launches Free Tutoring Initiative to Support Students Experiencing Homelessness at Illumination Foundation.

My Private Professor (MPP) has launched an initiative to provide free tutoring to youth supported by Illumination Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a mission to disrupt the cycle of homelessness through healthcare, housing, and other services.

MPP, an impact-driven, online educational services company that collaborates with businesses and organizations to provide personalized tutoring services for employees and clients, has focused its giveback model on providing meaningful, educational support to students experiencing homelessness.

Through this partnership, students residing in Illumination Foundation’s family emergency shelters will have access to free, 1-on-1, online tutoring to help them in school.

“The data is clear that tutoring is a game changer for students’ academic trajectories.

Why can’t students in underserved communities have the opportunity to work with the same exceptional tutors that work with those who can afford tutoring? This is what drives us,” shared Sona Shah, CEO andFounder of MPP.

Indeed, students experiencing homelessness face a multitude of challenges that impact their educational journeys. These students are 4 times more likely to drop out of school and 8-9 times more likely to repeat grades. (Homeless Students Are…, 2014)

Moreover, of students experiencing homelessness, only 24% are academically proficient in math, only 26% are academically proficient in science, andonly 29% are academically proficient in reading. (Federal Data Summary School Years 2015-16 Through 2017-18, 2020)

According to Illumination Foundation, more than 55,000 people are homeless in Southern California each year – a population that includes 32,000 children.

There’s already a growing list of students at Illumination Foundation who would like to receive free tutoring with MPP. “This is a fantastic resource that many families would not otherwise have access to,” notes Courtney Valdes, PsyD, Clinical Director of Children’s Programs for Illumination Foundation.

“It would mean that our students would have equal access to improve their academic outcomes and success. It would help us to continue to disrupt the cycle of homelessness and reduce one more barrier for the children we serve.”
